Sagamore Spirit was founded in 2013 by Kevin Plank, the entrepreneur behind sportswear brand Under Armour, to revive Maryland-style rye whiskey in its home state. The name draws from Sagamore Farm, a former thoroughbred racing property 22 miles from the distillery in Baltimore. Double Oak results from a two-stage maturation: 4–5 years in new American oak with high char, followed by 18 months in toasted oak with low char. This dual-cask approach maximizes wood contact and flavor extraction without overwhelming the rye's native spice.
The nose opens with baking spices, orange peel, and warm cinnamon. The palate brings cedar, bitter chocolate, and new oak forward, with clove and black pepper creating a tingle rather than a burn. The finish stretches long and warm, trailing allspice, cola-like sweetness, and a drying rye spice. It's a whiskey that marries wood-driven depth with the grain's inherent character—approachable but layered.
