Ruby Cask
Famous Grouse was established in 1896 by Matthew Gloag III, who inherited his family's wine shop in Perth and transformed it into a blended Scotch producer. The brand's iconic grouse logo was drawn by his daughter Phillippa. Smoky Black represents a deliberate shift toward smoke and peat — a modern expression that departs from the original Famous Grouse character.
The blend combines carefully selected malt and grain whiskies, notably featuring a rare peated variant of Glenturret. This peaty component is the key to Smoky Black's distinctive smoky profile and sets it apart from the core Famous Grouse. The blend matures in traditional oak casks.
On the nose, Smoky Black presents peat smoke alongside malty sweetness, dried fruits, and subtle sherry notes with a hint of anise. The palate is light-bodied and grainy, with smoke and pepper balanced against liquorice, brown sugar, and spice. The finish is dry and smoky, with hints of dark chocolate lingering.
