Single Malt First Edition

5.0 out of 5 (1 review)

Fercullen marks Powerscourt Distillery's first single malt — a significant moment for Irish whisky, as the first spirit distilled entirely in Wicklow in over a century. Named Ireland's Best New Irish Whiskey at the 2024 Irish Whiskey Awards, it reflects the expertise of head distiller and blender Paul Corbett, recognised as master distiller/blender of the year in 2023.

The nose is gentle and inviting: toffee, vanilla, and honeyed sweets form the foundation, joined by dessert apple, pear, and baking spices. Soft leather notes and hints of cinnamon and nutmeg add depth without aggression. On the palate, vanilla unfolds with soft cream, oak, and salted caramel — digestive biscuits and Tarte Tatin contribute a familiar comfort, while warming white spices provide structure.

The finish remains pleasantly sweet yet warming: oak spice, soft leather, almonds rolled in honey, and stewed fruit close without harshness. This is whisky that honours its Irish character — gentleness and subtlety — while demonstrating serious distilling ambition.
