Millstone DUTCH

4.5 out of 5 (1 review)

In 1975, Fred van Zuidam opened a small distillery in Baarle-Nassau with a single copper still and a clear vision. After building expertise with liqueurs and genever, the distillery began whisky production in 1996 — a deliberate challenge to the notion that outstanding single malt could only come from Scotland. Millstone proved otherwise, earning international recognition as the first Dutch single malt of genuine quality.

This 12-year-old expression matured in oloroso sherry casks and first fill barrels, creating a rich, oily mouthfeel. Zuidam's signature extended fermentation — seven days rather than the industry standard — contributes to the whisky's fruity, layered character and slow distillation in small copper stills deepens its complexity.

On the palate, a spicy arrival reminiscent of English breakfast tea gradually gives way to sweeter territory: honey and vanilla bridge fruity and roasty notes. The finish remains warm and peppery, with a distinctive spice that marks Zuidam's house style — not the peat-driven intensity of Talisker, but a cleaner, more mineral-edged warmth.
