Maker's Mark began in 1954 when Bill Samuels Sr. set out to create a bourbon fundamentally different from the standard offerings of the era. The defining choice: red winter wheat instead of rye in the mash bill, producing a softer, less sharp character. The formula—70% corn, 16% red winter wheat, 14% malted barley—was a deliberate move away from bitterness. Aged roughly seven years in new charred oak and bottled at 45% ABV, it represents a quiet revolution in bourbon thinking.

The nose opens with restrained sweetness—caramel, brown sugar—that gradually yields to fruity notes, vanilla, and hints of orange. On the palate, savoury elements emerge: caramel, vanilla, spice (clove, cinnamon), with cornbread upfront. The finish turns increasingly dry, marked by black pepper and tannins that fade gently.

This is a bourbon that rejects aggression. The absence of rye gives a rounder, more approachable dram—suited to those who've tired of sharp edges and value accessibility without compromise.
