High West Distillery was founded in 2006 by David Perkins, a former biochemist, and his wife Jane in Utah—the first legal distillery in the state since 1870. Double Rye is a blend originally composed of 2-year-old rye from Indiana's MGP Distillery and 16-year-old rye from Barton, though High West has since refined the recipe. This is a whiskey rooted in American rye tradition, built on the interplay of younger and more mature rye spirits.
At 46% ABV, this rye takes a direct, unpretentious approach. The nose reveals caramel and almond, with a buttery undertone. The palate unfolds with a light, thin mouthfeel: honeycomb sweetness, rye grass, and citrus peel—orange and stone fruit notes—anchored by pepper and clove spice. The finish is dry and peppery, with toasted sugar and oak edges.
