Millstone 2018 Peated Tawny Port Cask

Zuidam Distillers was founded in 1975 when Fred van Zuidam established a small distillery in Baarle-Nassau, on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. Millstone takes its name from the Dutch mills that grind the grain for their whisky — a deliberate nod to the region's heritage. This 2018 Peated Tawny Port is one of their Special releases, proof that Dutch single malt can stand alongside far older spirits from traditional whisky nations.

Matured for five years in a combination of sherry and port casks — an unusual pairing that amplifies the delicate smokiness of the peated malt with the warm, fruity character of both wine casks. The result feels considerably older than its age statement suggests.

On the nose: fresh fruit (apple, red berries) with spice and subtle peat smoke. The palate brings the smoke into sharper focus, with hints of charcoal and tar, but always tempered by vanilla and soft tropical fruit. The finish lingers pleasantly, with tobacco and nougat notes that extend the experience.
