Quarter Cask takes its name from the smaller casks Laphroaig used in the nineteenth century to transport whisky. When the distillery reintroduced these quarter casks for maturation in 2004, it unlocked a more intense extraction than standard-sized barrels allow. The spirit matures for ten years in ex-bourbon casks before finishing in quarter casks, a process that concentrates flavour and adds unexpected complexity to Laphroaig's signature peat-driven profile.
This is Laphroaig unfiltered. The nose hits hard with burnt peat and vanilla sweetness, laced with coconut. On the palate, the peat strikes immediately with an oily, enveloping texture, followed by sharp citrus, medicinal notes, and oak. The finish is short and punchy—pepper and brine linger, trailing into a smoky aftertaste that defines the Islay coast.
For those who embrace Laphroaig's uncompromising character, this delivers. The double maturation gives more depth than most non-age-statement releases, without tipping into heaviness.
