Compass Experimental Grain
About
Compass Box makes a calling card of defying convention, and Experimental Grain is the proof. This is no ordinary grain whisky: at its core sits a smoky, Coffey-still-distilled peated malt from Loch Lomond, a distillery known for open-minded experimentation. That smoky character—herbal, moss-like, clinging—cuts against the softer grain whiskies from Cameronbridge and North British, which contribute fudge, vanilla, and honeyed warmth. This is a blended grain that resists easy classification. The bulk comes from two major grain distilleries, but that younger, smoky Loch Lomond parcel adds something grain whisky rarely carries: pine forest and patchouli oil—layers you'd expect in a single malt. Bottled at 46% ABV, natural colour, non-chill-filtered. On the nose: fried banana and toffee, then that barbecue smoke that lingers. The palate is soft and oily, vanilla and honey mingling with the herbal-smoky undertone. No brute peat here—instead, a crumbly, earthy persistence that makes you pause and think.
