Glenglassaugh—'valley of the grey-green place'—takes its name from the windswept Aberdeenshire coastline where the distillery has stood since 1875. After reopening in 2008, it became a statement of intent: a single malt rooted in its coastal setting, drawing character from both land and sea.
The 12-year-old's cask recipe—bourbon, sherry, and red wine—is the engine behind its complexity. Bourbon provides structure and warmth; sherry and red wine add tropical richness and subtle sweetness. It's a three-part conversation rather than a solo voice.
On the nose: orange oil, ripe apricots, figs, pears. The palate is silky and oily, revealing toasted vanilla, caramel, and hints of chalk and roasted nuts. A whisper of salt and coastal air threads through. The finish is warm and measured, never overstaying its welcome. This is a whisky that rewards attention without demanding it—a genuine expression of place.
