Lindores Friar John Cor Chapter II

1974 Connoisseurs Choice
Imperial closed in 2000, making 1996 bottles rare windows into a distillery that spent more years shuttered than operating. Built in 1897 by Thomas Mackenzie—the same entrepreneur behind Dailuaine and Talisker—Imperial carved a distinct identity marked by mineral, waxy character seldom found elsewhere in Speyside.
This 1996 vintage matured in ex-bourbon casks through decades of slow transformation. Various independent bottlers have released expressions from this year, each with different ABV and outturn, but all share the same core signature: a whisky that tastes considerably older than its years suggest.
On the palate, dried fruit emerges—raisin, cherry—underpinned by creamy vanilla, then turns dry and spice-forward with ginger and pepper bite. The finish stretches long and mineral, with that characteristic waxy texture Imperial is known for. This is whisky for those who prize depth and age without contemporary polish—a raw glimpse into Speyside's quieter, more austere tradition.
