About
Compass Box returns to its storytelling roots with Brûlée Royale, a blended malt inspired by the crème brûlée perfected in 17th-century Versailles. The narrative threads back to François Massialot, the legendary head chef who created the dish for the Palace of Versailles, and forward to Compass Box's recognition that whisky—like a brûlée—is fundamentally about fire transforming sweetness. The producer partnered with renowned pastry chef Dominique Ansel to translate this culinary classic into liquid form. The blend is anchored by Benrinnes (53.3%), matured in ex-bourbon barrels, with Clynelish contributing its creamy, fruited character and Speyburn adding textural depth. The secret lies in the cask finish: specially toasted American oak from Independent Stave Co. in Missouri, shaped by computer-guided charring and toasting to extract toffee and caramel notes with precision. No added flavoring—just intelligent cask work. On the nose: immediate crème brûlée, grilled peach, fresh vanilla, burnt sugar. The palate is thick and silky: clotted cream, honeyed malt, baked apple, soft spice, gentle oak. The finish holds that caramelized sugar note—roasted sweetness, vanilla, a whisper of banana. At 49% ABV and non-chill-filtered, this whisky feels deliberate rather than novelty.
