Land of Orkney

4.0 out of 5 (1 review)

Highland Park was founded in 1798 by Magnus Eunson, a church beadle and part-time whisky smuggler who ran his distillery as a side venture. This double life—respectable by day, illicit by night—mirrors the turbulent early history of Orkney's whisky trade. The 'Land of Orkney' name celebrates this island heritage, and Highland Park still draws water from the same spring Eunson tapped over two centuries ago.

This 14-year-old single malt matures in a combination of sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, yielding a whisky of subtle sweetness and complexity. At 42.3% ABV, it remains approachable without requiring significant dilution.

The nose reveals malt and sherry influence, with notes of vanilla and crème brûlée emerging on closer inspection. The palate is smooth and balanced, combining fudge and caramel sweetness with a restrained smoky undertone—characteristic of Highland Park but never dominant. The finish lingers gently, offering spice and a whisper of heather.
