The Black Grouse
William Lawson's Scottish Gold is a blend built around single malt from Macduff, a Highland distillery constructed in 1962–63 by four Glasgow whisky brokers. The brand itself takes its name from William Lawson, a Scottish-born export manager who joined the Dublin spirits firm E&J Burke around 1888 and lent his name to what would become a popular blend.
What sets this whisky apart is a deliberate production choice: no peated malt. While many blends reach for smoke and peat to add character, William Lawson's instead anchors itself in Macduff's unpeated spirit and grain whisky, aiming for smoothness and approachability.
On the nose: malty grain with vanilla and a suggestion of tropical fruit, touched by light spice. The palate is soft and cereal-forward, with buttery notes and a whisper of smoke that comes from the blend's composition rather than direct peating. The finish is warm but restrained—a whisky that doesn't demand attention, but delivers straightforward drinking.
