Mortlach was founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Donald Mackintosh and Alex Gordon as Dufftown's first licensed distillery—built on the site of a former illicit still. The distillery is renowned for an unconventional distillation method: spirit from different stills is distilled separately, then combined and matured individually in sherry and bourbon casks before the final single malt is created.
This 12-year-old combines maturation in both ex-bourbon and sherry casks, balancing structure with richness. The approach reflects Mortlach's core philosophy: first-fill and refill sherry butts for depth, tempered by ex-bourbon casks for brightness and clarity.
The nose reveals raisins, sultanas, cinnamon and orange peel, underpinned by nutty fruit-cake character. On the palate, toffee, caramel and subtle ginger emerge with a medium body and creamy mouthfeel. The finish is warm and lingering, with persistent fruit notes that fade slowly.
