Kujira hails from Masahiro Shuzo, a distillery founded in 1883 in Okinawa by Shobun Higa, whose father Shozoku Higa once served as master chef to the Ryukyu Kingdom. That heritage of craft and respect for raw materials runs through this whisky: it is distilled from 100% premium Indica rice and matured in American oak casks. The name 'Kujira' (鯨, whale) references the Ryukyu islands and their storied spirits tradition.
This ten-year-old single grain displays the delicate, light structure characteristic of rice-based whisky from the subtropics. On the nose, honey and brown sugar emerge alongside whispers of rice paper and soft floral notes. The palate unfolds with vanilla and a gently spiced, subtly sweet character, while the finish lingers with a refined, powdered-sugar quality.
