12 Years
Springbank is one of Scotland's rare independently owned family distilleries—in the hands of J&A Mitchell & Co since 1828. The 12 Years Old is the flagship of their annual release: a cask strength bottling that has been produced each year since 2010, with varying cask recipes. This expression typically blends around 60–70% ex-bourbon casks with 30–40% ex-sherry cask, a combination that supports Springbank's characterful, unapologetic house style.
The nose opens with gentle peat, followed by ripe dried fruit (raisins, apricots, dried mango), orange zest, and subtle floral undertones. The palate is full and creamy, delivering chocolate, toffee, and grilled stone fruit that builds through the mid-palate. The finish is assertive and lingering—no compromise, exactly as Springbank intends.
This is whisky for drinkers unafraid of character. Springbank's unconventional profile—less polished than Speyside, more direct than most Islay—appeals to experienced palates that value authenticity over refinement.
