About
Ultramarine takes its name from the Latin 'ultramarinus'—'beyond the sea'—evoking the rare pigment once more precious than gold. Compass Box, John Glaser's boundary-pushing Scotch house, created this as the first release in the 'Extinct Blends Quartet': a series resurrecting lost flavours from late-1980s Scotland. The blend marries peated malts from Caol Ila and Glendullan with grain whisky, aged in casks that capture the antique Sherry and pipe tobacco character of a deluxe blended Scotch from a bygone era. This is deliberate retrospection—a return to the full, mature style of premium Scottish blends from decades past. The nose reveals toffee, polished oak, and complex peatiness. The palate follows with roasted pecan and raisins, wrapped in creamy sweetness and delicate spice. The finish brings together those mature Sherry notes with a briny, maritime edge—a reminder of the craft-driven Scottish tradition on which this blend is built.
