Port Charlotte 2005
Port Charlotte is Bruichladdich's heavily peated expression, named after Lady Charlotte Campbell, mother of the original distillery's 1829 founder. This 2005 vintage matured entirely in an ex-bourbon barrel—a choice typical of Bruichladdich's willingness to experiment, where wine casks and unconventional woods are as likely as standard Scottish practice.
At 48.4% ABV, this ten-year-old Islay feels substantial without aggression. The profile balances the expected smoke and salt of island terroir with the smooth, buttery character Bruichladdich is known for—a contrast that sets Port Charlotte apart from the sharper, more medicinal peated malts of neighbours like Laphroaig and Ardbeg.
