2010 Bere Barley

4.0 out of 5 (2 reviews)

Bruichladdich's Bere Barley project revives an ancient grain. Bere is a primitive barley strain grown in Orkney in 2009 and distilled in 2010 — a heritage variety suited to northern climates that produces a notably different spirit from modern malt varieties. The distillery's founders deliberately imported the wine concept of terroir into whisky, sourcing grain as a deliberate expression of place and ancestry.

Bottled at 8 years old and 50% ABV without chill-filtration, this spirit is oily and sweet — an explosion of intensity on the palate where cereal and malt are almost masked by vivid fruitiness. Honey, toffee, peaches and apricot lead; buttery, mineral undertones and subtle spice develop with time in the glass.

This is not classic Islay smoke. It's an inquiry into what happens when forgotten grain meets modern distillation — a whisky that tastes distinctly of its barley ancestry, not merely its geography.
