The Macallan was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a farmer and schoolmaster in Craigellachie, whose name gave rise to the distillery's identity—derived from Gaelic for 'field'. It was among Scotland's first legally licensed distilleries, a distinction that shaped its reputation for quality and consistency.
This 1987 vintage spent 18 years maturing in premium sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain—a maturation that defines its character entirely. Bottled at cask strength (58.4%) and non-chill-filtered, it retains the full complexity and oily texture that industrial processing would strip away.
On the nose: dried orchard fruit, black cherry, creamy vanilla and a whisper of rose. The palate reveals why Macallan's sherried style commands respect—rich, layered, with cooked fruit and dark chocolate notes that build steadily. The finish is long and warming, oak and subtle smoke lingering as the sherry's sweetness fades.
