Limited Edition Cask Strength
Lagavulin's 12 Year Old Limited Edition Cask Strength is a recurring annual Special Release from Diageo that pushes the distillery's signature smoky style to its fullest expression. The name itself—derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Lag a' Mhuilinn', meaning 'hollow of the mill'—anchors the whisky to its home on Islay's southern coast, where the distillery has operated since 1816. Bottled at cask strength, this 12-year-old retains the full intensity of its maturation without dilution.
This is uncompromising whisky. The nose leads with smoke and menthol, backed by the raw heat of 57.7% ABV, but fruit cuts through—apples that shift into dried red fruits, a whisper of sherry influence—without softening the peat's grip. On the palate, the character broadens; citrus (lemon and lime) emerges alongside honey and vanilla, only to be swept aside by bonfire smoke and ash. The finish is long and austere, with coal smoke and lingering sweetness that can persist for hours.
This is Lagavulin at its most unforgiving—not for those seeking a gentle entry point, but for those who want the full force of heavily peated Islay single malt.
