A'Bunadh means 'of the origin' in Gaelic — a tribute to James Fleming, Aberlour's founder. Launched in the late 1990s as a bold experiment, this whisky was bottled at cask strength and aged entirely in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts with no age statement. What was once regarded as a curiosity has become one of the world's most sought-after sherry-cask single malts.
Each batch is hand-crafted from start to finish, engineered for moist raisin, dried fruit, and homemade fruit cake character. The use of first-fill Oloroso casks and high alcohol (59.6% ABV) delivers a full, creamy body and deep mahogany colour. The spirit is unapologetically sherried — not a whisper of subtlety.
The nose opens with dried stone fruit, sultanas, and dark chocolate. On the palate, the sherry influence is immediate: sweet cherry, toffee, and a firm tannic grip from spicy oak. The finish is long and robust, with cocoa, exotic spices, and lingering dry oak. This is a whisky that demands slow sipping and rewards patience.
