Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston on Islay's rugged southern coast, near Port Ellen. For nearly two centuries, the distillery remained primarily a supplier to blenders until it gained prominence as a single malt in the 1990s. The 18 Years Old expression debuted in 2009 as a successor to the 15 Year Old, though it was discontinued in 2016.
Matured entirely in ex-bourbon casks, this whisky draws from Laphroaig's signature peat profile: approximately 20% of the malt is dried on the distillery's own malting floors, with the remainder sourced from Port Ellen maltings. The extended aging mellows the intensity.
The nose reveals a mature, dusty peat character — less aggressive than younger releases, with vanilla and subtle sweetness emerging. The palate balances rich caramel and dried fruit against briny salt, seaweed, and a medicinal edge. The finish extends long and layered, weaving vanilla, honey, and warm spice into a bittersweet conclusion that lingers with peat smoke and oak.
