Cruach Mhòna translates from Gaelic as 'peat stack' — the kind you'd see drying along Islay's windswept coasts. Bunnahabhain, founded in 1881 on the island's northernmost point, is known for predominantly unpeated whisky. But since 1997, the distillery has produced peated spirit for several months each year, of which Cruach Mhòna is a fine expression.
This is uncompromising whisky. Peat smoke dominates immediately — robust and present, as if standing beside a burning turf fire. Beneath lie notes of toasted bread, white pepper, and liquorice. At 50% ABV, it has grip without aggression.
On the palate, a full, creamy texture unfolds with malt and sweetness at its base, smoke layering over the top. Salt and pepper emerge, along with a hint of seaweed — the island's maritime character comes through clearly. The finish is dry and lingering, with smoky notes that persist.
This is whisky for those who genuinely love peat smoke; not an entry point, but a complex, mature dram.
