Within four years of taking over in 2017, master distiller Billy Walker transformed GlenAllachie from an anonymous blending source into one of Speyside's most celebrated distilleries. In 2020, this 10-year-old cask strength batch earned global recognition: World's Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards — a title that vindicated Walker's uncompromising approach.
The spirit was matured in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, then finished in virgin oak. That pairing creates a profile that goes beyond sherry sweetness into something textured and substantial — the new oak adds grip and tannin structure that prevents the whisky from becoming flabby.
On the nose: dark chocolate, heather honey, and spice (cinnamon, nutmeg). The palate delivers dense caramel, raisins, and a leathery, almost meaty character from the sherry, anchored by the dry, tannic pull of virgin oak. The finish is long and warming, with cocoa and ginger fading slowly.
