The Singleton was born in 2006 when Diageo unified three established single malts under one brand name — a strategy inspired by an unlikely source: Glen Grant's surprising success in Italy with an approachable, fruity Speyside. The Dufftown distillery itself dates to 1896, when Peter MacKenzie founded it during the 19th-century whisky boom. This 15-year-old expression shows why that experiment worked: a warm, balanced Speyside that need not be complicated to satisfy.
Maturation in a mix of American and European oak defines its character. American casks contribute vanilla and soft toffee; European oak adds spice and dryness. At 40% ABV, this is a drinker's whisky, not a nosing exercise.
In the glass: soft fruit aromas (green apple, pear), honey, and lightly toasted brown sugar. The palate is creamy and sweet, with toffee and caramel, tempered by pepper and a whisper of oak bitterness. The finish remains warm and malty, without fuss. This is Speyside as intended: relaxed, flavourful, unpretentious.
