Bowmore, Islay's oldest distillery since 1779, sources Ruby Port casks from one of the Douro Valley's most storied Port houses for this 16-year-old expression. After maturing in ex-bourbon and European sherry casks, the whisky undergoes a secondary finishing period in these characterful Ruby Port casks—a collaboration that bridges Scottish and Portuguese traditions.
Sixteen years of maturation combined with Ruby Port finishing produces a profile anchored in dark fruit sweetness. Dried fruits, red grapes, peaches and plums form the core, supported by vanilla and Demerara sugar notes. Beneath this fruitiness lie wood and oak nuances, with a whisper of Islay's signature peat smoke—present but restrained.
On the palate, the whisky feels smooth and sweet, with walnut, chocolate and oak creating a warm, lingering finish. The modest 43% ABV makes this an approachable dram, though some find the Port influence and oak tannins occasionally overshadow the spirit's underlying fruitiness.
