Torfa takes its name from Old Norse for 'turf'—a nod to the Scandinavian linguistic roots woven into North East Scotland's dialect. Released in 2014, this was Glenglassaugh's inaugural peated expression, marking a significant shift for the coastal Highland distillery founded in 1875 at Sandend Bay.
Matured entirely in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at natural strength (50% ABV) without chill filtration, Torfa carries a purposeful character. The peating sits around 20ppm—present and smoky, but never overwhelming the spirit beneath.
On the nose, smoked grain and briny air meet citrus and ginger. The palate delivers tropical fruit and honey cushioned by dried spices and an oily, phenolic grip. The finish remains clean and smoky, fading to a peppery bite that lingers on the tongue.
