Peatrichor
Peatrichor is Douglas Laing's tribute to Islay's most defining moment: the rain. The name references petrichor, the earthy scent released when rain falls on dry earth—a phenomenon the island's distillers know intimately. This is no poetic flourish, but a moment of genuine recognition. Big Peat, Douglas Laing's flagship since 2009 and the first in the Remarkable Regional Malts series, releases this limited edition at cask strength using only single malts distilled on Islay—a blend of some of the island's most iconic distilleries.
At 53.8% ABV, non-chill-filtered and without added colour, this whisky speaks directly. The intensity hits immediately: smoky, medicinal, with notes of tar and ash that gradually give way to something softer. Beneath the peat emerges sweetness—vanilla, tropical fruit, a hint of caramel—while the ground underneath remains felt: earthy, mossy, with a flash of sea salt.
This is Big Peat unfiltered and unadorned. Not refined, not polished—rather, a whisky that connects you straight to the island, from rain to stone to smoke.
