Benriach was founded in 1898 by John Duff as an expansion of his Longmorn distillery, initially named 'Longmorn No. 2'. After a difficult start—the distillery closed within two years—the site was later reopened and evolved into an innovator. The Sixteen embodies Benriach's signature approach: three cask types for maturation (ex-bourbon, sherry, and virgin oak) balance fruity character with sweet vanilla and toasted oak notes.
Sixteen years in these three cask styles creates a whisky where sherry influence is evident—dried fruits, raisins, strawberries—without heaviness. Virgin oak contributes vanilla and roasted notes, while ex-bourbon keeps it smooth and approachable.
The nose and palate deliver classic fruit: apple, pear, apricot, and honey. The finish is soft yet present, with spice and a light mineral edge. This is a whisky for those who appreciate sherry-matured malts without extreme intensity.
