2012 Bere Barley
Bere is Britain's oldest cultivated cereal grain—a nearly forgotten heritage that Bruichladdich revived in 2012. This was no marketing exercise: distillery master Jim McEwan personally selected the casks for this 10-year-old single malt, a deliberate choice to let the character of this rare barley take centre stage. The result is a whisky defined not by smoke or seaspray, but by the texture and minerality of the bere itself.
Matured in American bourbon casks with a portion of French wine casks, this bottling at 50% ABV carries a full, creamy body. On the nose: white grapes, toasted oats, and lime. The palate reveals apple pie, apricot, and honey, followed by a dry, grainy finish with hints of ginger and citrus. This is not a classic Islay whisky in the heavy-hitting mould—it's a study in grain, mineral, and subtle sweetness.
