Forest Reserve

4.3 out of 5 (1 review)

James Fleming founded Aberlour in 1879 as a grain merchant who turned to whisky-making. Though the distillery burned to the ground in 1898 and had to be rebuilt from scratch, Aberlour grew into a respected Speyside name. The Forest Reserve pays tribute to a modern commitment: for each bottle sold, Aberlour funds native woodland restoration across Speyside through the Forests of Scotland partnership.

This ten-year-old single malt matured in ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks before a finishing period in French Limousin oak. That French oak is the pivot: where many Speyside malts are soft and approachable, the Limousin finish here adds warmth and woody grip.

The nose opens with green apple and pear, then vanilla and toffee, but the French oak pulls the finish drier than typical Aberlour. Almond and pepper linger, with subtle tannins that add structure. A whisky that deliberately sidesteps Speyside convention—not creamy and welcoming, but with a more angular, individualistic character.
