Lagavulin marked its 200th anniversary in 2016 with this 8-year-old, a tribute to Alfred Barnard, the Victorian whisky writer who visited the distillery in 1887 and sampled an eight-year-old expression he deemed exceptional. The distillery revived that moment with this bottling, aged in refill American oak casks—a choice that preserves the spirit's youthful vigour without the weight of first-fill wood.
The nose balances Lagavulin's signature peat smoke with unexpected brightness: citrus zest and salt, supported by malty undertones and maritime character. On the palate, smoke returns with peppery bite and a sweet undercurrent—dark plum and fig emerge beneath the iodine and peat. The finish remains warm and smoky, with a dry conclusion that doesn't disguise the whisky's youth.
This is non-chill-filtered Lagavulin—each glass carries the full character of Islay's southern coast. At 48% ABV, the expression has grip and texture that many peers lack, without the heaviness of older variants.
