Founded in 1826 by James Allardice in the Valley of Forgue—a name derived from the Scottish Gaelic for 'valley of the brambles'—Glendronach endured early hardship, including a devastating fire in 1837, before finding its footing through successive ownerships. The distillery's modern renaissance came in the early 2000s, when it emerged as a benchmark for sherry-matured Highland single malts. The 12 Years Old embodies that recovery: a whisky that harnesses the full depth of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez cask influence without excess.
Maturation in both sherry styles delivers the whisky's characteristic richness and dark amber hue. At 43% ABV, it strikes an accessible balance—serious enough for connoisseurs, approachable enough for those beginning to explore sherried Scotch.
The nose opens with spiced warmth—clove, ginger, and cinnamon—layered with dried fruit and subtle chocolate notes. The palate arrives full and silky, revealing toffee, hazelnuts, and gentle oak tannins that develop without aggression. The finish holds medium length, warm and lingering, with spiced dried fruit that leaves a pleasant, sustained impression.
