Akashi traces its roots to 1679, when the Urabe family began producing sake in the coastal town of Akashi, near Kobe. In 1888, they established Eigashima Shuzo as a formal operation. Whisky production arrived much later—2007 saw their first release—and today Akashi is one of Japan's most widely distributed whisky brands. Red is the entry point: a blend of in-house malt and grain spirits, supplemented with Scottish whisky.

The spirit spends two years maturing in ex-bourbon casks, then finishes for one year in European sherry casks. This brief aging regimen yields a light, young profile with gentle sweetness and clear bourbon-cask character.

On the nose, baked bread and lemongrass emerge pleasantly. The palate opens oily, with a quick burst of spirit heat that fades into sweet, chewy berry notes and brown sugar. White pepper and caramel notes appear as it develops. The finish is short and clean—honest rather than ambitious, well-suited to highballs or as an introduction to Japanese blended whisky.
