2010 Barley
Bruichladdich's 2010 Islay Barley is an exploration of terroir through grain. When founders Simon Coughlin and Mark Reynier reopened the distillery in 2001, they brought their background in fine wine and the concept of terroir with them; this bottling emerged from their belief that barley — like grapes — carries the character of place and soil. For this release, the same barley variety was grown across four distinct Scottish regions: the Black Isle, Aberdeenshire, Ransfield, and locally on Islay. Each location contributed its own signature.
The 2010 matured entirely on Islay in ex-wine casks, lending the whisky a silky, fruity structure that transcends the typical unpeated Islay profile. At 50% ABV, it carries enough grip to sustain the delicate texture without overwhelming it.
On the nose: warm, buttery sweetness with date syrup and white chocolate, followed by citrus, white peach, and fresh grape on the palate. The wine casks assert themselves through a subtle grapefruit-like quality and a floral honey note. The finish brings pepper and spice, with a slow-building sweetness that lingers.
