Port Charlotte 2011 PAC: 01 Heavily Peated
Port Charlotte PAC: 01 is a question about terroir and tradition. Bruichladdich, once known for unpeated whisky, reopened its gates in 2001 and asked itself: what is authentic Islay whisky? The answer was Port Charlotte – a return to the heavily peated style that historically defined the island. PAC: 01 pushes that inquiry further with a dual composition: two separate distillations from November 2011, each taking its own path through American oak and red wine casks from Pauillac.
The two parcels matured separately – one six years in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, the other seven – before both were finished for two years in refilled Pauillac casks. This unconventional blend creates something rare: a heavily peated Islay that offers smoke, yes, but also refinement.
In the glass, a full, complex dram unfolds. Dark red fruit – ripe cherries, red apples – threads through the smoky foundation, while spice (clove, ginger) and chocolate emerge. The maritime salt of Islay weaves throughout, warm and well-integrated. The palate brings sweet oak and malt, followed by toffee and vanilla. The finish is long and dry, smoky but never overwhelming.
