Nikka Super was born from love and loss. Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Japanese whisky, created this blend in 1962, shortly after the death of his Scottish wife Rita. Without her support during his years in Scotland and his return to Japan, his dream would never have taken root. This blend honours their partnership — a testament to what two cultures could build together.
Super draws malt whiskies from Nikka's two core distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo, blended with grain whisky. The composition reflects Taketsuru's commitment to authentic Scottish methods applied to Japanese terroir. It has remained a bestseller for decades not through marketing, but through quiet consistency and balance.
On the nose, warm malty notes emerge alongside honey and a hint of orchard fruit. The palate is soft and approachable, with caramel, vanilla, and a subtle sherried warmth that doesn't dominate. The finish is clean and measured. This is a whisky that speaks of craft and patience rather than spectacle — the kind you return to, not the kind you chase.
