2009 The Organic

Bruichladdich's 2009 The Organic marks a deliberate choice: this 8-year-old Islay single malt was distilled from 100% organic barley, a rarity in whisky production. Founded in 1881, the distillery has survived multiple ownership changes and closures, but this bottling reflects a modern commitment to transparency and provenance.

Matured in American oak ex-bourbon and ex-Tennessee casks, the spirit delivers a light, fresh fruit profile that sidesteps the typical Islay smoke. Expect ripe apples, oranges, and citrus with delicate floral notes and an almost creamy palate texture. The character is crisp and balanced rather than austere.

The finish runs short but intense: sour lemon candy, grapefruit, and lemon juice take centre stage, with malt and sugar lingering beneath. This is refined, understated Islay—less bombast, more nuance. At 50% ABV and 8 years old, it rewards neat sipping or a touch of water to unlock further complexity.
