When Billy Walker acquired GlenAllachie in 2017, the whisky veteran and chemist immediately recognised the potential in this distillery, operating since 1967. Under his stewardship, GlenAllachie transformed from an anonymous blending supplier into a recognised producer of standout single malts. The 12 Year Old became his statement: crowned World's Best Single Malt at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards.
This 12-year-old matured in a combination of ex-Pedro Ximénez, ex-Oloroso, and virgin oak casks—a cask strategy that blends Speyside tradition with individual character. Virgin oak contributes structure and vanilla, while the sherry casks add rich, sweet depth. The result is notably more sherry-forward and oak-driven than many of its age-peers.
On the nose, intense and layered: dried fruit, honey, and red berries underscored by spice. The palate delivers full caramel and peppery notes, with cherry adding nuance to the sherry backbone. The finish is textured and persistent, peppery caramel lingering long.
This is a Speyside whisky that proves cask discipline and focused spirit can create something genuinely compelling—not a routine 12-year-old, but a whisky with real ambition.
