Portwood

4.0 out of 5 (1 review)

The Balvenie Portwood is widely regarded as one of David C. Stewart MBE's finest achievements, a masterwork from the distillery's legendary master distiller. Named after the ruins of Balvenie Castle in Dufftown—whose name means 'village of luck'—this 21-year-old single malt embodies both complexity and restraint.

Matured first in American oak ex-bourbon casks, it then receives a finishing period in European oak port pipes that once held some of the finest port wines. This two-stage approach creates a distinctive balance: the bourbon maturation provides a clean, structured foundation, while the port finish layers in sweet, fruity character without overwhelming the underlying malt.

On the nose, dried orchard fruits, fresh hay, and a hint of green vegetation emerge. The palate unfolds smoothly with honey, soft cinnamon, and vanilla spice, underpinned by creamy malt. The finish is long and soft, with nutty echoes that fade gently. This is a mature Balvenie that avoids the wood-dominance of older expressions, allowing the sweetness and fruit to take centre stage.
