Compass Box The Spice Tree
The Spice Tree is a masterclass in wood management from Compass Box, the independent blending house founded in 2000 by John Glaser. Launched in 2005, this blended malt pioneered an unconventional technique: French oak staves inserted directly into casks to intensify flavour and add layered complexity—a practice borrowed from winemaking. The Scotch Whisky Association threatened legal action against the method, but Compass Box's ethos of challenging convention established The Spice Tree as a modern classic.
The blend draws from three Highland distilleries: 60% Clynelish, 20% Dailuaine, and 20% Teaninich, creating a rich, multi-layered foundation. The French oak treatment delivers baking spices—cinnamon, clove, vanilla—that feel entirely integrated into the whisky's character.
On the nose, deep gold colour gives way to ripe orchard fruit (pear, apple), cereal sweetness, and the distinctive warmth of toasted oak spice. The palate is full and assertive: stewed fruit and baking spices lead, underpinned by caramel and subtle tropical notes, all anchored by robust, toasty oak structure. The finish lingers long and dry, spice and wood lingering pleasantly.
