Old Ballantruan takes its name from the Ballantruan spring in the Cromdale Hills near Tomintoul, one of the region's purest water sources. This heavily peated expression breaks with Speyside's typical light, fruity character — Tomintoul's answer to distilleries seeking a more assertive peated malt.
Bottled at 50% ABV and peated to approximately 55 ppm, Old Ballantruan marries a smoky foundation with Speyside's subtler inflections. The palate is full and punchy, delivering smoked barley, charcoal and peat, tempered by liquorice, toasted cereal notes and hints of vanilla fudge.
The nose reveals earthy peat and a softer, fruity undertone. On the tongue comes an oily texture with barley sugar and roasted grain character, while the finish lingers with smoke and fine complexity. This is a whisky that doesn't hide behind its peat — rather, a balanced exploration of smoke and flavour.
