Sakurao Islay Cask Finish: Where Japanese Elegance Meets Scottish Robustness

The Sakurao distillery near Hiroshima presents a distinctive single malt: the Islay Cask Finish 5 Year Old. This whisky is an exclusive Netherlands release through importer Craft Spirits Company. The story began when founder Riley and his partner Esmee visited Japan, tasted this whisky, and immediately knew it had to be exclusively theirs for the Dutch market.

Matured in bourbon cask followed by 2.5 years in ex-Laphroaig casks, this whisky carries a pronounced Islay character. At nearly 5 years old and bottled at a robust 55% ABV, it delivers excellent drinking strength. The cask yielded 287 bottles.

On the nose, Laphroaig influences dominate: peat smoke, iodine, roasted almonds, wet stones, and tropical fruit. The palate is salty and peppery with notes of iodine, peat smoke, roasted almonds, and mango, complemented by an oily mouthfeel. The finish is long and refined, featuring black pepper, pencil shavings, tar, and medicinal touches.

This is a whisky for peaty spirit enthusiasts who appreciate Japanese distilling craftsmanship. A beautiful balance between elegance and character that rewards exploration.
