Rotterdam's micro-distillery Cley has crafted a remarkable 3-year-old cask strength single malt that challenges assumptions about where great whisky comes from. At 52% ABV, this expression demonstrates that the Netherlands is emerging as a serious contender in the global whisky landscape. Created by Paul den Dulk and Maria Neves, who trained their craft in Belgium and Schiedam, this release showcases Dutch innovation and distilling expertise.

Production and Maturation

This whisky is crafted from barley malts sourced locally from Rhoon, near Rotterdam. The new-make spirit undergoes triple distillation in a Schiedam-sourced still before spending three years maturing in ex-bourbon barrels from Jack Daniel's, Heaven Hill, or Woodford. A six-month finish in new American oak quarter casks adds additional complexity and depth—the result feels considerably older than its three years.

Flavor Profile

On the nose, expect oak, cinnamon, vanilla, and caramelized apple. The palate reveals a creamy mouthfeel with layered notes of orange, vanilla, caramel, walnut, and Dutch almond-meringue cookies. The finish is medium-length, sweet and spicy, with lingering vanilla and cinnamon.
