North Port-Brechin was a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery established in 1820 in the town of Brechin, in the eastern Highlands of Scotland. One of the lesser-known distilleries in Scottish whisky history, it operated for well over a century before succumbing to the industry downturn of the early 1980s. The distillery was permanently closed in 1983 during the great distillery cull that swept through Scotland as whisky demand declined sharply. As a closed distillery, North Port-Brechin's remaining whisky now exists only in independent bottlings and rare releases, making each expression a genuinely precious collector's item. The distillery produced Highland single malt in a style typical of the eastern Highlands. Surviving bottles have appeared through prestigious independent bottlers such as Cadenhead, Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice, and Diageo's Rare Malts Selection, with vintages ranging from the early 1970s to the early 1980s. These bottlings are highly sought after by whisky collectors and enthusiasts alike. Notable releases include a 23-year-old distilled in 1971 and bottled at cask strength of 54.7%, a 20-year-old from the 1979 vintage, and a remarkable 38-year-old single cask bottled by Cadenhead from a 1977 vintage. With no new spirit being produced, stocks continue to dwindle, cementing North Port-Brechin's status as a rare and historically significant ghost distillery.
