Kavalan named this expression after their Solist range, but 'Peatist' is misleading—it's only moderately peated. This ex-bourbon cask bottling at 54.8% ABV attempts to bring smoky character to Taiwanese single malt, but the balance falls short. The nose opens with dry smoke, balanced by vanilla, honey and mashed banana. Coconut and ripe greengages follow, along with caramel-coated peanuts that lend a rum-like quality. Hints of moist earth and rotting orange appear, though overall complexity is limited. On the palate, a slightly funky mix of rounded sweetness and sharper peat emerges: coffee bonbons, caramelized nuts, dried mango slices. A touch of antiseptic and tonic water disrupts the flow. Dry earth and tannic texture pull in different directions. The finish is fairly long—mulch, burnt oak, orange and tobacco. This isn't a poor dram, but Kavalan's typical exotic fruitiness gets buried under peat and bourbon cask influence without real synergy. For the price, you'd expect greater coherence.
