Distillerie des Menhirs is one of France's earliest whisky pioneers, based in Brittany. The distillery has its roots in 1986 as a producer of apple cider, a craft deeply tied to the agricultural traditions of the Breton region. It was not until 1999 that the distillery turned its attention to whisky production, making it one of the first in France to do so and helping to lay the groundwork for what would become a thriving French whisky scene. What truly sets Distillerie des Menhirs apart is its bold decision to use buckwheat — known in French as "blé noir" or "sarrasin" — as the primary grain for its whisky. Buckwheat is notoriously difficult to malt and yields significantly less than conventional grains, making it a challenging but distinctive choice. The result is the Eddu range, a portfolio of whisky's that carry a uniquely Breton character, reflecting the terroir and agricultural heritage of the region. The distillery is distributed through renowned spirits specialist La Maison du Whisky, underlining its reputation in the French premium spirits market. Distillerie des Menhirs has gained recognition as a true innovator in European whisky, producing expressions that have inspired other producers — including rum distilleries — to finish their spirits in Eddu casks. Its pioneering use of buckwheat continues to be one of the most distinctive and celebrated signatures in French whisky.
