Dumbarton was a legendary grain whisky distillery located in the town of Dumbarton in Scotland's Lowland region. The distillery was established in 1938 by the renowned Canadian distilling company Hiram Walker, and at the time of its opening it was the largest continuous distillery in Scotland producing grain whisky — a remarkable distinction that cemented its place in Scotch whisky history from the very beginning. The sprawling complex also housed Inverleven, a separate single malt distillery operating within the same site. Dumbarton was a powerhouse of grain whisky production, supplying spirit for major blends including Ballantine's, whose bonded warehouses were built on the site and used from 1959 onwards. The distillery became famous not only for the scale of its operation, but also for an unusual claim to fame: a flock of geese that famously guarded the distillery grounds, immortalised in sculptures that remain a local landmark. Dumbarton was also the first grain distillery in Scotland to challenge existing production conventions of the time. The distillery closed in 2002, making its remaining stocks increasingly rare and sought after. Independent bottlers such as The Last Drop Distillers and Duncan Taylor have released exceptional expressions from Dumbarton, including a 1977 vintage that was awarded Single Grain of the Year in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible, and a remarkable 1961 single cask release. These bottlings serve as a testament to the extraordinary legacy of this now-silent Lowland giant.
